Featuring the work of Alice Nelson, Alice Gerfen, and Reed Bills

Alice Nelson is the host of a podcast series called Small Town Stories, and the co-host of a short story podcast called A Creative Mind Fiction with her friend Carrie Zylka. These original short stories are written, narrated, and produced by Alice and released through her production company Ten Feet Tall Productions. Alice is also working on a semi-autobiographical story called My Girlhood Among the Outlaws, that will deal with her experiences being bussed into a white neighborhood during the late 70s and early 80s. You can contact Alice at alicernelson@gmail.com or check out her stories here and at acreativemindfiction.com

Alice Gerfen is a 24-year-old poet, witch, activist, and book-slinger. Though she grew up in Idaho, she received her B.A. in English & Creative Writing at Knox College in Illinois. There, she was a Poetry Editor then Editor-in-Chief for Cellar Door, an eclectic literary magazine, before moving to Portland to work at Powell's City of Books. Her poems are often centered around queerness, trauma, witchcraft, mental illness, family, and current events as they unfold.

Reed Bills (they/them) is an artist currently living in sin.

DEATH RATTLE & THE SPILL OPEN CALL:
For first hand accounts dealing with the unsettling, the horrifying,
the unexplained, and the downright spooky.

Have you had an encounter with a force that could not be explained? We are on the hunt for brave souls willing to tell their 5-6 minute first-hand accounts via Zoom for a chilling Halloween edition of The Spill: a live story-telling event. We are looking for stories that range from close encounters with hauntings, shadows that watch you while you sleep, the instinct that saved you from a potential true-crime incident, the depths of nature - whether an attack from a known documented species or a creature only known from the stories we tell one another, UFO sightings, nerve wracking experiences with people who had bad intentions, nautical horrors, an abandoned house that was never really vacated, a benevolent friend from beyond the veil, a recurring nightmare, or the monsters deep in the backwoods that claws within the darkness… if you have a tale to tell we want to hear it!

submit to tell your story:
email or dm a brief description of your tale to
deathrattlewriter@gmail.com or @death_rattle_writer_fest on instagram

5-6 minute story-telling slot DM or email with a brief description of your story to sign up for a storytelling slot. And if you have any preferences about your story and how you present information (i.e. having your camera off / username rather than your real name for anonymous purposes)
please let us know.

Rules for conducting yourself as a storyteller:

Rule # 1: The use of hate speech of any kind will result in immediate banishment. I.e. Racial slurs, body shaming, ableist, classist, homophobic or transphobic remarks or anything else that we define as hateful or racist.

Rule # 2: Each storyteller has 5 minutes to relate their tale. When your time is up we will give you a warning sound effect, which means that you have 1 minute to rap up your story. Please pay close attention to your time; sometimes it is helpful to practice beforehand to make sure that you can tell your whole story in 5 minutes or less.

Rule # 3: Have fun and be respectful to those that are willing to share with us!
